A slow, meditative chill piece of music based on simple pads and weird effects. Perfect for thinking and relaxing, but also quite sad, hence good soundtrack for evaluating one’s life decisions. The choir in the middle adds some religious feelings in the mix. Good music for walking at night in a crowded city, just being invisible, a ghost, just you and your problems, your restless thoughts.

NikiN – Solid Gear

A big and aggressive electro track, with an increasing roughness to it. A lot of saw bass provides a dangerous and futuristic mood, as if this is the soundtrack to some death match from a future brutal sport played in a grand and monstrous arena. There is a break in the middle, where a deep bass cools down the atmosphere and prepares the second strike. This is useful for subjects of utopia, but more in the action SF sense of the word, not the philosophical one. Could also work for subjects related to hackers or killer robots and other tech destructive devices. I recommend this as the theme for some video game trailer.

Ultravox – Lament : A Mystery of Sadness

You don’t really need to be a retro freak or someone who grew up in the 80′s to be familiar with the music of Ultravox (at least, I hope so !). Chances are, if you are neither of those two things, you still heard Dancing with Tears in My Eyes at least once, either on the radio, or that time when you decided to watch VH1 Classics or when you dad shouted at you to turn down that ”dubstep crap” and listen to some real music. Well, allow me to expand you knowledge of that band with that song.

There were a lot of synthpop masterpieces to choose from (like the obvious Vienna or maybe Reap the Wild Wind), but I finally settled on Lament, the title track from their 1984 album, which spawned the aforementioned hit. Lament is basically just what the title promises — it’s a sad, deep and thoughtful ballad, but this is that good sadness, that you never get enough of. The memorable chorus synth hook can drift one’s thoughts in all sorts of directions (even after listening to the song on repeat for one entire week in 2006). Give it a listen, see if there are any ‘wounds’ in your life, which you don’t want healed.

A rap beat based on a hard deep bass line, with a crunk flavour. A genuine floor filler, suitable for cool Memphis, L.A., New York and Miami clubs. It sounds both dangerous and intimidating, but also danceable, like an early 2000’s r’n’b track. Good for themes dealing with gangs, krump, gangsta love, but also eroticism, the track being quite a hot and sexy beat, taking you back to scorching nights of urban passion.

The Prodigy Named Greatest Dance Act of All Time

The Prodigy have had bestowed upon them the glorious title of “Greatest Dance Act of All Time”. The poll was held by MixMag and it seems tens of thousands of fans have put their clicking fingers to good use, helping the rave masters beat out names like Daft Punk, Depeche Mode or The Chemical Brothers. You can see here the rest of the Top 20.

The guys took a moment off from their studio chores to say ”cheers” to their army of ‘ants’, who earned them yet another award. See the full message here.

In an interview with Zane Lowe, earlier this month, master H and Keef also provided a few details about their forthcoming album, which is currently in the works and which they hope will be all written and recorded this year. If you’ve been around the years before “Invaders Must Die” was out, you’ll know not to get extremely anxious. But better late than unfresh. One thing is for sure, though: they have announced that new tunes will be played at Download Festival, this summer.

This is an ambient-tech electro track, with deep bass sequences and eerie synth melodies, a perfect background for numerous science-oriented projects. This could work very well for a video illustration of the way a virus gets transmitted, an invisible danger, forever multiplying and mutating, spreading all over the globe at unstoppable rates, be it by a simple touch or via a fomite. It would also be useful for videos and projects related to scientific discoveries and research, the mood here being one of progression and development, but on a serious, solemn level, with hardly any hope.

NikiN – Confessions of a Sane Anarchist

This is a suspenseful, bass driven action-thriller theme, with a deep and disturbing mood of tension and imminent disaster. It’s designed as a theme for a villain, who uses his wits and diabolical intelligence in order to bring chaos to the world, just to see it burn. The metallic percussion elements suggest the workings of a dark, but focused mind, that is still derailed in a profound and dangerous way, as depicted by the numerous distorted sounds and effects. It’s also suitable for various action/adventure sequences, like chases, heists, dangerous missions in exotic lands or other special forces activities. All these are conveyed by deep, dark strings, grand sounds of horns and a haunting, yet simple melodic bit.

Slow, tech piece, based on plenty electro sounds and bells. It’s both atmospheric and yet intriguing. It could be a suitable soundtrack for a video of someone designing or building something. Because of this I really recommend it for tutorials and ‘how-to’ videos. The dreamy mood makes the track also quite suitable for space or science shows and documentaries. It might add the perfect background to stuff related to doctors and medical research.
