Best Non-Single Masterpieces of 2009
by Niki N. Phaser on Dec.16, 2009, under Non-Single Masterpieces
Yes, I gave in and embraced the cliché of making ‘best of the year’ tops. Still, ‘top’ is a strong word, it sounds so… hierarchical, so definite, things that can be calculated with numbers. Artistic value has a lot to do with the moment. While I’m listening to a great song and I’m really feeling it, I’m not thinking “This song is slightly less wonderful than another great song”. Music is not a sport. When it comes to art, each individual is the judge. Music is the place where the mind and the heart meet, it has nothing to do with other people’s opinions. You should also know that some of the songs from this list might be released as singles in the future, so read the date when this was posted before sharing with your friends… Ok, enough with this mumbo-jumbo, let’s see who made to number 1, people!!!!!
11. Morrissey – It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore
His recent albums are pretty far from the fresh outta The Smiths stuff. I’m talking about the music, because the lyrics have always been briliant – the guy just can’t be topped when it comes to editing ideas into the most simple and yet poetic words. It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore it’s one of the most powerful songs he wrote in years, talking about how politeness and hypocrisy have nothing to do with one’s expression of love: “All the gifts that they gave can’t compare in any way to the love I am now giving to you right here right now on the floor”. “I’m Obsessed With The Mess That’s America”
by Niki N. Phaser on Dec.08, 2009, under Music News
2010 comes with the promise of new talent, as all years, for that matter. One lady we should keep an eyelid on is Marina Diamandis aka Marina And The Diamonds, whose debut album, The Family Jewels will grace us on February 15. And if you’re wondering what’s with all the excitement, just listen to Hollywood, the single which gives us a taste of what’s to come. Despite Marina’s voice sounding more suitable for 90′s feminist grunge, Hollywood is the perfect upbeat new-wavey pop pill, with plenty of wink sarcasm (“Oh, my gawwwd, you look just like Shakira”) to differentiate it from the r’n'b pop we are used to. Another omen (or is it a clue?) is the fact that Hollywood‘s video is directed by Kinga Burza, who just so happens was the author of Katy Perry’s video for I Kissed a Girl. It’s also cool that Marina looks her Greek/Welsh origins, so maybe we’ll get our generation’s very own Irene Papas. It woun’t be long now till ‘we’re all obsessed with the (beautiful) mess that’s Marina’…
R.I.P. A-ha (1982-2010)

Well, another one bites the dust, another legendary, record-breaking synthpop legend that is. With three years short of their 30th anniversary, Norway’s most famous band, A-ha, decided to call it quits. And even in these sad times, they maintain their grace and go out with a bang: a world tour in 2010, ending with a goodbye show in Oslo. No fighting, no spitting, no guitars breaking, A-ha are saying their farewell the best way they know: pleasing the world with their immortal pop masterpieces, gathered in 9 albums, spanning over almost three decades. It is no wonder that they succeeded in always remaining a big name in the world of music. They adapted to the times and offered each generation since the 80′s a number of hits worthy of any kind of decade-defining compilation. We all have our favourite A-ha tracks, I know, but here are three of mine, one for each decade active:
