H.I.M. Resume Their Heartkilling Habits

HIM premiered their new video, Heartkiller, on MySpace this Friday, where it quickly became the most watched video for the day. This is the Love-Metallers first single off of their highly anticipated new album, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, which will be released next month. Embracing a more poppy sound, Heartkiller might just do the trick Ville Valo has hoped for every first single in the past: it gives a taste of the new direction, while still comforting worried fans. A definite departure from the ‘dirty’ sound of Venus Doom, this new material features a resurrection of the more synthy nuances of Dark Light and Razorblade Romance, as Valo himself admits.

The James Copeman (Razorlight, Mystery Jets) directed video features the band in a dark setting, with some flashes of their taxidermied power animals overlapping from time to time. Of course, this is also a chance for Valo to ‘premiere’ his new tattoos, of Maya Deren and Klaus Kinski. Overall, Heartkiller is a decent song, not more, but it does the job: it states that HIM are up and running once again.

The Theory Of HIM’s ‘Screamworks’

HIM are taking the first steps into the promo frenzy of their next album, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice. So far, the tracklisting has been revealed and with titles like Love, the Hardest Way, Heartkiller, Ode to Solitude or The Foreboding Sense Of Impending Happiness, fans of the Finnish idols shouldn’t have a lot to worry about, but plenty to be siked about. As previously reported, the release date (for US) will be around Valentine’s Day, February 9, to be more exact. Then, we will witness the practice of HIM’s Screamworks. Still, fans will get a taste of the new material this year, a single being expected in mid December.

Early reports and interviews hint at a more accessible, hit-friendly album. Metal Hammer’s exclusive first review of the album suggests that the Matt Squire produced effort is a considerable departure from 2007′s Venus Doom, which was Ville Valo’s intention in the first place. Lyrically, it seems that this time around, in the old ecuation of love and death, the pulsating variable of sex plays a major role. Linkin Park – In Pieces : All in One

If you are a bit familiar with the history of Linkin Park, you would know that their 2007 album, Minutes to Midnight, was a crucial moment in the band’s evolution. A big difference from previous albums was that they got more in touch with their inner pop child and the result was several softer songs like Leave Out All The Rest, Valentine’s Day or In Pieces. This is a song where Chester Benington really exhibits his pop voice. There is no nu-metal screaming, just a lot of vulnerability and that “wounded soul’s power”, displayed in some of Linkin Park’s best songs. In fact, the whole track, lyrically speaking, sounds like a love song, but in LP style, which means plenty of imputations and emotional accusations like “There’s truth in your lies, Doubt in your faith, What you build you lay to waste”.

Musically, In Pieces represents a fortunate combination of numerous elements from distinct genres. The song is built on what sounds like a celesta riff. There are hip-hop synth beats and atmospherics effects courtesy of Mr. Hahn, but you also get real rockin’ drumming, both intense and complex. The vocals, as I said, are soft and quite balladesque. The second verse is punctuated by some Clashy guitar hits and speaking of guitars, Brad Delson’s solo really takes you back to some 80′s hard rock, something like AC/DC or Motorhead even. It’s a shame that Linkin Park didn’t saw a single in this one, but they certainly haven’t ignored it live.

Ville Valo, singer-songwriter from HIM announced that his band is working on a new album, to be recorded in august. For now, the album title is ‘SCREAMWORKS: Love in Theory and Practice’, but Ville admitted that nothing is set. They gave themselves till Valentine’s Day 2010 to finish up everything for the release, including a video for the first single. This will be the first three-year break between albums since Razorblade Romance (1999) and Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights (you guessed it, 2002).

It will be produced by Matt Squire, who did some stuff with Taking Back Sunday and The Used, which makes me wonder if he’ll get fired like Andy Wallace, who was let go from working on HIM’s Dark Light, for making them sound “too American”, as the legend goes… It doesn’t really matter who’s producing, as long as they don’t mess up Valo’s catchy riffs too much.
